Let me rekindle your memory to travel through the golden days of Doordarshan with their Ten Popular Doordarshan Television Series telecasted during 1980s and 1990s.
Doordarshan was started in 1959 in New Delhi and carry a long legacy. Today the state-run company runs 34 channels covering many regional languages.
Before the Sunday starts, I guess the first song played by Doordarshan is “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara”.
- Rangoli, 1989
How can one forget eagerly waiting for the Sunday morning program first thing for watching Rangoli and the costume of beautiful Hema Malini. The program is a musical television series where the Host will present in a nice cultural ambience and background music presents top musical film hit songs during the season. Hema Malini’s costume and the way she delivered the presentation made her so popular in each corner of the Nation.
The Lord Rama was made even more popular and likable for many Indians regardless or religion, casteism, geography or family deity by this very Doordarshan Television serial. Directed by Ramanand Sagar, this mega hit Doordarshan TV Serial ran for 78 plus weeks. What one can remember was the unbiased story told by the team. Vikram Aur Betaal was another mega hit Indian Mythology television series on the stories of King Vikram and the Vetala. Aired with 29 episodes, each week’s episode starts with a twist and ends with another twist leaving the audience to wait for next week episode with lot of anxiety. The actor Arun Govil acted for King Vikramaditya and Actor Sajjan acted as Betaal. Their combination was such a hit. Each episode taught us all a moral value to instill in us.
- Mahabharat, 1988
Right after the epic DD TV serial Ramayan got over, another Guinness Record winning Doordarshan TV Serial was introduced on Mahabharat. Mahabharat told us finer details of story of Mahabharat and the family feud between the Pandava princes and the Kaurava kings. Lord Krishna preaching, and famous tricks played were very well enacted to win our hearts forever. The animation in 1988 was still great and very much trendy to make us believe in aerial warfare, missile and different asthras.
5. Surabhi 1990
One of the first popular and lengthy cultural magazine show aired in 1990s. Surabhi won our hearts forever. The show ran for 9 seasons and 415 episodes. The program was such a hit that both the hosts Renuka Shahane and Siddharth Kak became national identities. This show involved audience participation by writing and reading out letters, quiz programs. The show received 1.4 million letters from audiencs across the Nation and appeared in Limca book of records.
- He Man and the Masters of Universe, 1983
Perhaps the first external super hero we are all exposed from an Indian scenario, He Man is the most Powerful man in the Universe and he saves planet Eternia and protects the secret of Castle Grayskull. The action hero raises his sword towards sky to get electrified power and he becomes unstoppable for evil forces. He along with his friends fights the evil Skelator.

The Animated Television Series is based on the Marvel Comics Spider–Man, originally an American TV Series. The most thing you like about Spider Man TV Serial is the opening promo video. Peter Parker is the Spider Man who gains super power by an accident and he starts using the power to save the people from his super villains. In between he also struggles in expressing his love for Mary Jane Watson. This animated version of Spider Man was telecasted on Sunday evenings in the 1980s. Later the inspiration was made as full-featured movies.
- Alif Laila, 1993
International famed Arabian Nights or One Thousand and One Nights is the base for this Indian Doordarshan TV Serial Alif Laila. The show is another hit that it ran for 260 episodes.Alif Laila was the winner of the Most Outstanding T.V. Serial award by the India Cine-goers Academy. The introduction music is still memorable. The legacy of the Arabian Nights told in the form of exciting, enthralling stories, packed with great morals, amazing characters, accompanied by flying carpets, magic lamps, fairies and more.
This is a historical television drama produced, directed and casted by Chandraprakash Dwivedi and ran for 47 episodes. The TV series focused on telling us the life of Theorist Chanakya (VishnuGupta). Chanakya was also the royal advisor of King Chandragupta Maurya whose preachings are being considered as political advices that rulers should follow in order to offer peace and lead a rightful rule to the people of the kingdom. The series have won 5 Uptron Awards. It was hailed as one of the milestone of Indian Televison. The moral values and authentic story telling from this historical drama is still praised by Indian television audience.
Chandrakanta is an Indian fantasy television series based on the Devaki Nandan Khatri’s novel ChandraKanta. Aired between years 1994 and 1996 the TV Series was created, written, produced, and directed by Nirja Guleri. The show was also run on Star Plus and Sony Entertainment Television in later years.
